Marine Applications

Ship owners and ports are no exceptions to asbestos dangers and risks. You may be surprised to discover just how many ships and port buildings contain high levels of asbestos that must be managed properly, especially for operational ships. Marine settings require a different approach to asbestos surveys due to their unique design and construction. Ships are often subjected to hostile environmental conditions such as shocks, vibration, rolling, pitching, swaying and slamming.

Additionally, marine asbestos surveys on ships pose another challenge in the time constraints often present during docking times and coordinating the surveys alongside other trades and in compartments with restricted space. Most vessels also require heavy maintenance, repairs and upgrades throughout their lifespan, which is when the risk is highest for disturbing the asbestos within.

Expertise and Experience

In a recent maritime project, we provided an asbestos survey and a decommissioning service for a privately owned vessel. During the project we:

  • Carry out an in-depth inspection of the vessel for asbestos materials
  • Produce a register showing the location of all asbestos materials
  • Provide a quotation and method statement for the removal of materials
  • Carry out the removal of asbestos materials from the vessel
  • Provide clean air certificate upon completion to allow decommissioning of vessel

The client was thrilled with the outcome of both the survey and the removal word and said: “Fibre Safe has provided a first-rate service at a competitive price. They had good knowledge of surveying marine vessels and provided fast, friendly and reliable service. I have no problem in recommending this company”.
