Do I need an Asbestos Survey before doing DIY work?

The British homeowner loves to get stuck into the odd DIY project.

We hammer and drill away to our heart’s content without considering how we could potentially disturb fatal asbestos within walls and ceilings that could lead to severe and long-term health effects.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that consists of sharp fibres. The material was incredibly popular in decades gone by due to its strength and resistance to heat and fire. Due to these properties, asbestos was used in a range of building products pre-1999, when it was outlawed. When disturbed, these tiny fibres are thrust into the air and can be easily ingested and inhaled. These fibres are incredibly harmful to you and cause several severe health issues, from lung cancer to pulmonary diseases.

Asbestos can be found in over 4,000 building products which you can find in everyday items, and asbestos is present in many buildings across the country, from hospitals and schools to warehouses. The ill effects that asbestos can have on your health are terrifying, and the only way to combat this is to ensure that awareness surrounding its dangers and volatility is genuinely understood.

Do I need a survey before carrying out work on my home?

There are two answers to this. Legally, no, you do not need to attain an asbestos survey before DIY work providing this is low-level work that doesn’t require planning permission or the removal of walls or structures. However, if your home was built pre-2000 and you have not had an asbestos survey on the home, you have no way of knowing if or where the asbestos is in your home. This increases the risk of you disturbing it.

The biggest issue surrounding asbestos in the home is the lack of knowledge surrounding asbestos handling and removal from both homeowners and contractors that attempt to conduct work with asbestos without the correct qualifications. Failing to handle asbestos correctly can be genuinely life-threatening to those in the vicinity of it.

Fibre Safe has many years of experience in the safe removal of asbestos and is fully qualified in the correct procedures for disposing of asbestos in a safe and structured way.
