The construction industry has witnessed numerous innovations and materials over the years. Two such materials, Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) and asbestos, have been in recent headline news due to their implications on health and safety, especially in educational institutions.

Can You Wash Asbestos Out of Clothes?

If clothing becomes contaminated with asbestos, it’s easy to assume it can be cleaned like anything else. In reality, asbestos fibres don’t behave like normal dust or dirt.

They are extremely fine, durable and capable of embedding themselves into fabric. Once they’re there, removing them safely is far more complicated than simply putting clothes through a wash cycle.

In short, asbestos cannot be safely removed from clothing using normal washing methods, and attempting to do so can spread contamination further.

Can You Wash Asbestos Out of Clothes?

No – not safely using a domestic washing machine.

While washing may remove some surface dust, it does not reliably remove asbestos fibres. More importantly, the process of handling and washing the clothing can spread contamination far beyond the original item.

Clothes are handled, moved, loaded, and agitated. Each of these stages creates an opportunity for fibres to become airborne or transferred elsewhere.

Why Does Washing Asbestos Contaminated Clothing Create More Risk?

The issue isn’t just the clothing itself, it’s how easily fibres spread once disturbed.

Handling dry clothing can release fibres into the air without you realising. Once airborne, they can remain suspended and be inhaled.

Washing machines introduce another layer of risk. They are not designed to contain or filter asbestos fibres, meaning contamination can persist long after the initial wash.

There is also the risk to others. Historically, one of the most common forms of asbestos exposure came from workers bringing fibres home on their clothing. Family members were then exposed over time without ever working directly with asbestos themselves.

Can Asbestos Contaminate a Washing Machine?

Yes – and this is one of the biggest concerns.

Unlike standard dirt or debris, asbestos fibres are not easily flushed out through normal washing cycles.

Once asbestos fibres enter a washing machine, they can settle inside the drum, collect in seals, filters or pipework or transfer onto future loads of clothing.

This means even clean clothes washed afterwards may become contaminated.

Can Asbestos Ever Be Washed Out of Clothing?

In controlled environments washing can remove a proportion of fibres under controlled conditions. However, removal is not complete. Fibres can remain embedded in the fabric, and there is no practical way to confirm that clothing is fully decontaminated.

Domestic washing does not replicate these conditions. The process is uncontrolled, and the risk of spreading fibres is significantly higher.

Because asbestos is a known carcinogen with no safe level of exposure, partial removal is not considered a safe outcome.

What Should You Do Instead?

If clothing may have been exposed, the priority is to avoid spreading fibres further. A few simple precautions can significantly reduce risk:

  • do not shake, brush or handle the clothing unnecessarily
  • remove clothing carefully if worn during exposure
  • place items in a sealed, heavy-duty bag
  • avoid bringing contaminated items into clean areas
  • keep the material isolated until advice is obtained

Should Contaminated Clothes Be Thrown Away?

In many situations, disposal is the safest option.

If clothing has been heavily contaminated, fibres may remain embedded in the fabric even after cleaning attempts. This creates ongoing uncertainty and potential risk.

Clothing that cannot be safely decontaminated should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of in line with regulations.

That said, every situation is different. The level of contamination and the type of material involved should always be considered before making a decision.

How Asbestos Spreads Through Clothing

Clothing is one of the most common ways asbestos fibres travel beyond their original source. Fibres can attach to fabric without being visible and may then transfer to:

  • furniture and soft furnishings
  • carpets and flooring
  • vehicle interiors
  • other clothing

This is known as secondary asbestos exposure, and it has historically been a major source of risk for people who never worked directly with asbestos.

When to Seek Professional Advice

If there is any doubt about asbestos exposure, it’s best to pause before taking action. You should consider seeking advice if:

  • clothing has been exposed during work in an older building
  • asbestos-containing materials may have been disturbed
  • visible dust or debris was present
  • you are unsure whether asbestos is involved

In many cases, the greater risk comes from unknowingly spreading contamination after the initial exposure.

Concerned About Asbestos Exposure?

If asbestos may be present in a building, identifying and managing it properly is essential.
