Asbestos Surveys for Schools

Fibre Safe offers Asbestos Management to schools, businesses and residential homes across many areas stretching from North Wales to Liverpool. Our mission is to improve the understanding of asbestos throughout businesses and homes and the knowledge on how best to handle it. A massive cause for concern is the number of asbestos-related diseases that have been linked to CLASP schools. Quite frankly, this is unacceptable and an unnecessary risk to the children and teachers within the schools.

What is a CLASP school?

The ‘Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme’ was a light-steel, prefabricated steel building structure that was introduced in 1957 in a bid to assist with the rebuilding that was required post-second world war. Unfortunately, these CLASP school buildings were built with a huge amount of asbestos which has caused many issues over the past few decades since the dangers of the material have been unearthed. CLASP schools are a hotbed for asbestos exposure and therefore endanger the teachers and children within.

Earlier in the year, The Express published an article highlighting these dangers and noted that MPs were set to launch a parliamentary enquiry into the issues. With more than 5,000 asbestos-related deaths in the UK each year, it’s little wonder that the UK government are being called upon to take action.

Asbestos Surveys

Asbestos surveys are available to both residential and business clients alike, and the surveys themselves differ from building to building. For example, you may be looking to demolish an old building. For this, you would need the Pre-Demolition Survey, which would highlight hidden asbestos within the building fabric which would be disturbed during demolition if not safely removed in advance.

Another type of survey is an Asbetsos Management survey, which ensures that the inhabitants of a home are not under any danger from ACM (Asbestos Containing Materials). We work closely with housing authorities to conduct many of these surveys on their homes. This type of survey is not too dissimilar to the types of survey we carry out on CLASP schools to advise on how much of an impact the ACM’s are having on the teachers and students within the school. Often, it’s safer to leave the asbestos where it is, providing that it isn’t in a spot that can be easily disturbed.
