Brunswick Dock, Liverpool

Shortly before the festive period, our team headed over to Brunswick Dock in Liverpool to perform some routine asbestos surveys and checks on the old buildings on the dock. Originally built in 1827, the docks are an incredible part of the local history, and our team always love working on these great historical buildings.

Pre-Demolition and Refurbishment Survey

These intrusive surveys are conducted before any renovation or demolition work and are used to locate any ACMs which may be hidden within the building fabric which could be exposed by the contractors during their works.  This is also a requirement under the construction design management (CDM) regulations.

Asbestos surveys identify the presence of any ACMs in your building and help toward formulating a management or removal plan for them. In addition, asbestos surveys are a legal requirement in some circumstances, such as pre-demolition and renovation surveys and management surveys. Several different surveys are all suited to other areas, and for more information on the surveys we offer, take a look at our dedicated web page here.

Dangers of Asbestos

Shockingly, asbestos is still responsible for the death of around 5,000 workers each year, which is actually more than people killed on the roads. Asbestos is often thought of as a historical issue, but in truth, any building built post-2000 could contain ACMs that are incredibly harmful.

Asbestos can be fatal, and it is linked with the following illnesses and diseases:

  • Mesothelioma – Cancer that affects the lung lining and is almost always derived from exposure to asbestos in some form
  • Asbestosis – A serious lung scarring issue that occurs following heavy exposure to asbestos over the period of years
  • Pleural Thickening – A lung lining issue that causes the lining to swell, thus squeezing the lung, causing shortness of breath and tight chest

Is asbestos still commonly found?

Contrary to popular belief, asbestos is still fairly common in older homes and the building materials used to build them. Asbestos can still be found in over 4,000 building products and is prevalent nationwide, from hospitals to schools. As you can see from the previous section, this presence of asbestos can be fatal. Businesses and homeowners should make an effort to have asbestos surveys conducted on their buildings to ensure the safety of everyone working or living within.
