Is Asbestos Hazardous?

Asbestos is the name of a group of fibrous silicate materials occurring naturally in the environment. This material was widely used between the 1950s and 1980s in the manufacture of building materials.

Asbestos containing materials become hazardous when they are disturbed and release fibres into the atmosphere.

Types of asbestos

There are three types of asbestos which are most commonly found in ACMs.

Crocidolite

(blue asbestos)

Amosite

(brown asbestos)

Chrysolite

(white asbestos)

Fatal Diseases

When asbestos is damaged, fibres are released, and once inhaled, they can potentially cause a number of serious and fatal diseases such as asbestosis and cancer.

Asbestos Health Risks

If building materials that contain asbestos (like older insulation and ceiling and floor tiles) begin to decompose over time, asbestos fibres can be found in indoor air and may pose a health threat. Sprayed coatings, pipe insulation and Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) are thought to be the most dangerous due to their high content of asbestos and friable nature. Only recently that we have become fully aware of the health problems caused by exposure to asbestos. When asbestos is damaged, its fibres will be released into the air and once inhaled, they can potentially cause a number of serious and fatal diseases. The tiny asbestos fibres are linked to a number of diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Because of these health risks, asbestos is no longer used as a building material. This is the reason for the UK wide ban in 1999. However, buildings constructed before the year 2000 may still have asbestos in them and despite the fact that asbestos was banned from use in the UK in 1999, it is still fairly commonly found in homes and places of work across Liverpool.

Examples of more commonly known ACMs where asbestos fibres can be found in your home or business premises include: roofing, garages, flooring, tiles, insulation for heating pipes, and loft insulation, loose lagging, ceiling panels, electrical insulation.

The article attached below highlights the implications for companies and employers who did not follow the correct procedures for asbestos removal.

An employer was sentenced for failing to reduce the exposure and spread of asbestos when demolishing a large pig shed, despite having received asbestos training, and submitting a plan of work which detailed the safe removal of asbestos from site before commencing the demolition. The sentence was 12 months imprisonment and £1000 fine, whilst being suspended for 1 year.
