Asbestos: Boilers, Flue Pipes and Lagging

You may find asbestos wrapped around older hot water pipes and water boilers, or used to tape together sections of heating ducts. Pipe, furnace, and boiler insulation used to be repaired this way so it is still fairly common to find asbestos insultation around boilers, furnaces and pipes. The danger to the home owner and property owner, is that as the insulation deteriorates, asbestos dust is released. The dust contains asbestos fibres which are breathed in easily. Asbestos fibres when inhaled can lead to a serious non-cancerous respiratory disease called asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Simply hoovering asbestos dust will actually expel the fibres into the room air.

In most cases asbestos fibres are bonded in the material and cannot be released unless the material is disturbed or damaged.

Here is a recent example where we were able to help a local home owner by removing their boiler unit and flue pipe, both of which contained asbestos.

Asbestos Boiler and Flue Pipe Removal, Wirral

In February we carried out removal of an old floor standing boiler unit and flue pipe in Raby Mere. The home owner contacted us to say that their heating had gone off and their engineer had refused to undertake any works on the system as it was believed to contain asbestos. A simple check showed that both the floor standing boiler unit and flue pipe did contain asbestos fibres. We were able to remove both of these items within a couple of hours and the home owner had her heating back on by the end of the day. NB: Although many engineers believe they are allowed to remove asbestos with their asbestos awareness training, this is simply not true. Removal of any asbestos product requires specific Category B asbestos removal training and the necessary insurance to remove this hazardous material.

If you think that the materials you are about to handle contain asbestos, then you should not try and move the material yourself. If you are unsure, then Fibre Safe are able to carry out an asbestos inspection at your home or business premises – regardless of size, across Wirral and Merseyside. We pride ourselves on our excellent reputation we have built up by delivering on our promises.
