News Article: Directors of Blackpool’s South Pier FINED £140k

This recent news article below highlights the real cost of allowing untrained staff to work with and handle asbestos containing materials.

During refurbishment work at Blackpool’s South Pier, both workers and members of the public were exposed to asbestos fibres.

The pier’s directors tried to save £17,000 for a licensed company to carry out the work- which would have meant closing the pier for six days during the removal of the roof, but instead instructed their own employees – equipped with just disposable body suits, and no training, to carry out the removal of the circus style roof.

Preston Crown Court heard how they had removed the asbestos material away by hand, using a crow bar, and then attempted to clean the asbestos from a carpet using a Hoover, after removing the roof.

The firm was charged £140,000 in fines and lost six weeks of trading.

They pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of their employees, failing to ensure the health and safety of the public, and allowing asbestos fibres to be released into the atmosphere.
