Contaminated Vehicles

It's not just buildings prone to contamination

Asbestos contamination not only affects homes and buildings but also motor vehicles. Our team has seen many cases where asbestos containing items have been transported in vans and cars without the owners knowing the vehicle contains the contaminants. Once asbestos materials have come into contact with the textiles of the seats and carpets, it is extremely difficult for it to be remediated. Without an effective solution to restore vehicles back to pre-incident condition, the vehicles are merely sold as contaminated salvage for a fraction of their true market value.

Fibre Safe Ltd have a proven vehicle decontamination process track record which uses leading industry technology for restoration and to ensure a vehicle’s cleaning is maximised in the most timely and cost effective way. Every vehicle goes through a triage and inspection process to determine the optimum restoration programme.

Car service contamination survey

Asbestos fibres can causes anything from mild contamination of the surface materials right through to fibres lodging in the gaps and confined spaces of the vehicle. Our technicians work within strict Health and Safety guidelines to clean and restore the vehicle back to pre-incident condition.

In some major instances, the vehicles can be fully disassembled. This includes removal of all carpets, upholstery and trim to allow for further assessment and decontamination. The decontamination processes will vary for different components and the extent of contamination found during inspection process.

The decontamination process outline by Fibre Safe is as follows:

  • Desktop Study / Review of incident
  • Collection of vehicle from customer by our technician
  • Triage / Inspection of vehicle
  • Risk Assessment & Method Statements
  • Setup Control Measures & Environment
  • Strip down vehicle if necessary
  • Decontaminate vehicle
  • Post inspections and quality checks
  • Independent analytical testing from UKAS accredited analyst
  • Return vehicle to client

Vehicles are placed into a strictly controlled environment which may consist of negative pressure and a fully sealed enclosure. Controlling the environment is vital in arresting the spread of asbestos and maintaining safety conditions for our technicians to undertake the decontamination and inspection process.

After decontamination, each vehicle receives a thorough quality check and swab testing by an independent UKAS accredited analyst. All restored parts are guaranteed to meet and exceed hygiene standards and all restored vehicles are issued with a decontamination certificate and project file, outlining the restoration programme.
